ROCKLAND SHORT FILM FESTIVAL 2008

Important dates:
April 18: deadline for submissions
May 1: Festival line-up announced
May 14: Public Exhibition at Riverspace Arts in Nyack

Filmmaking in Rockland County?  No doubt you are familiar with numerous residents who work in film and television in New York and Los Angeles and escape to homes here at night or between jobs. But films are being made here all the time. Unlike most of their long-form film and television neighbors, filmmakers who make short films are creating films right here from start to finish. Some have been shown all over the world, some barely at all, on screens that range from cell phones to the Cannes Film Festival. Some of these filmmakers work primarily in other fields while others earn a living as full-time filmmakers, and some are just starting out while others have decades of work behind them and have secured international reputations. Being a maker of short films means having few opportunities to show one’s work, and even less opportunity to show one’s work at home. That’s why Rivertown Film has showcased short films by local filmmakers since it was founded in 2001.

Are you a local filmmaker? Then you know that there aren’t many local prospects for keeping your skills up to date, networking with your peers, or showing your films to your neighbors. Do you enjoy seeing truly independent, hand-made films?  Unless you have been watching films in New York City you may never have had the opportunity. If you fall into either of these two categories, the Rockland Short Film Festival is for you. Submit a film or just come to watch at the local film event of the year.

Presented on May 14th 2008 as part of Rivertown Film and Riverspace Arts in Nyack’s popular Wednesday Night at the Movies, the Short Film Festival will start at 8PM, after the Rockland Student Film Festival. The filmmakers will be on hand to say a few words about their work, and everyone is invited to a reception afterward in the Riverspace lobby.

The normal Wednesday Night at the Movies ticket prices of $9 general, $7 seniors, students and general Rivertown members, and $6 for student and senior members, is on this evening a suggested donation. Otherwise, give what you can, or be our guest.

Film and video makers are part of our local arts community. Nationally, statewide, and regionally, this is a growing industry. Join us in celebrating local filmmaking, raising public awareness of it, and building a film community in Rockland County.

The 2008 Rockland Short Film/Student Film Festival is made possible with funds from the Community Arts
Grants Program of the Arts Council of Rockland, the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts, a grant from Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee, and a grant from the Provident Bank Charitable Foundation.
