Did you know that in 2007, videotapes by Rockland students were shown at the Chicago International Film Festival, the Seattle International Film Festival, the Atlanta Film Festival, the Los Angeles Film Festival, and in festivals as far away as Finland? Or that they have been shown at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, won a Student Emmy Award, and won five awards at the nationwide Telly Award competitions? It’s pretty likely that more people have seen most of these films outside our community than have seen them here!
Local student music and theater programs host sold-out performances, but we have no similar tradition of student film and video exhibition. And consider this: student music and theater programs present work that has been written by others, while student video productions are completely the work of those who make them.
The Rockland Student Film Festival gives us a chance to view student work in a real movie theater, and it gives people who enjoy films an opportunity to see the work of the next generation of filmmakers.
The Student Film Festival was founded in 2004. Originally called the Rockland Student Video Contest, it was founded by the Rockland Independent Film Network and its director Deborah Shufelt. Rivertown Film, which had been presenting programs of student work since 2001, joined as a cosponsor the first year. The first festivals were held at the Nyack Center and at the Garnerville Arts Festival. This year Rivertown Film has taken full responsibility for both the Rockland Student Film Festival and the Rockland Short Film Festival, and moved them to Riverspace Arts in Nyack, the home of Wednesday Night at the Movies.
The 2008 Rockland Short Film/Student Film Festival is made possible with funds from the Community Arts
Grants Program of the Arts Council of Rockland, the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts, a grant from Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee, and a grant from the Provident Bank Charitable Foundation.
